Collet – 20

Description

This 20-series collet is the precision sleeve that centers and locks the router bit in the spindle of a CNC machine. Its slotted, tapered body compresses around the tool shank when the nut is tightened, passing the spindle's rotation to the bit with minimal runout. The 20 usually identifies the collet system, such as ER20, rather than the bit diameter.

Runout shows up as rough edges, burnt material and bits that break sooner than expected. When this happens, inspect the collet for dust packed into the slots, scored inner surfaces or a cracked segment. Blow the collet and taper clean after each tool change, and never tighten the nut without a bit inside, as this can deform the sleeve.
