HyperTherm Retaining cap

Description

The retaining cap screws onto the front of a Hypertherm torch and holds the consumable stack, meaning the electrode, swirl ring and nozzle, firmly in place. It also keeps those parts aligned and pressed together so current and gas pass through correctly.

Tighten the cap by hand only, never with pliers, since over-tightening can crack it or damage the torch threads. Replace it if you see cracks, melted areas, worn threads or heavy spatter that cannot be cleaned off. A loose or damaged cap lets the consumables shift, which leads to poor starts and a misaligned arc, and on some torches a safety interlock will stop the arc from firing at all.

Different Hypertherm torches use different retaining caps, and some come in separate hand and machine versions, so check the torch model on the handle or lead and any number moulded into the old cap.
